What to expect at an Aromatherapy Session

You have heard about the benefits of aromatherapy and want to have an aromatherapy session yourself, but are hesitating. You may ask yourself, "What can I expect from an aromatherapy session?" or you may wonder if it will benefit your specific condition. As your aromatherapist I will be vitally interested in discussing any symptoms of illness you may be displaying and may arrange your session around those symptoms, but unlike prescriptive medicine, aromatherapy is a holistic form of treatment. As such, our aromatherapy session will include aromatic blends and techniques designed to enhance your overall sense of well being.

How an Aromatherapy Session Begins

We will begin your aromatherapy session by discussing your medical history and any personal issues that may be bothering you. It is very important that you are thorough in revealing your medical history, including illnesses, injuries and allergies. I may wish to do a form of bodywork, for instance, therefore I will need to know about your problem areas. If your main reason for our session is for stress relief, treatment for depression or some other psychological or emotional difficulty, you needn't "bare your soul" to, but do let me know what kind of relief you are seeking and whether or not you are on any medications.

I will determine the best form of treatment based on our short initial conversation or the form I ask you to fill out. I will then explain to you what treatment I feels will be best for you. If I feels that you may need treatment that falls outside of my abilities or have unrealistic expectations, I may suggest alternative treatment. This rarely happens, though, because aromatherapy is designed to augment many conventional medical treatments as well as having its own intrinsic value.

The Aromatherapy Session

Each client is different and your aromatherapy session will be tailored to your particular needs. Some of the common forms of aromatherapy include:

  • Massage
  • Inhalations
  • Soaks
  • Compresses
  • Liniments
  • Salves

These may be administered singly or in combination, but usually a combination of treatments are given. The type of massage you will be given will depend on my training and assessment of your needs. The essential oils I use may include specific oils for general purposes and/or special blends designed for specific purposes, such as stress relief or relief from flu symptoms.

The very least you can expect from an aromatherapy session is to come away feeling more relaxed than you were when you went in. The essential oils used in the practise have the "magical" ability to soothe weary muscles, minds and spirits. Aromatherapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of therapy you will most likely thoroughly enjoy.
